I Needed That

The other day, as I was changing the liner in his diaper pail, Ian reached over the rail of his crib and patted my back. Then he laid his head on my shoulder.

I straightened, and he looked up at me. “What’s up,” I asked. Then he hugged my arm. “Aw, I love you, too,” I said.

Ian raised his arms toward me, and I picked him up. He put his head on my shoulder again, wrapped his arms around my neck and squeezed as he patted my shoulder.

As I held back tears, I decided that when Ian raises his arms toward me, I will never, ever refuse to pick him up.

That’s exactly why I can’t wait to be a mom! Babies/kids are the true definition of unconditional love.

Not me. When Ian comes here needing a nap, and I put him in the pak ‘n play to sleep, he looks at me as if I’m the biggest traitor in the world. The tears begin to gather. Then suddenly he wails in protest. His little arms reach out to me, begging to be taken out of the evil sleep device. I leave with a broken heart. But 45 minutes later when he wakes up, he’s in a great mood (usually) and I’m glad I’ve practiced some tough love.
