Now, “Dad, you wouldn’t know, you weren’t there” is the rod with which we are regularly whipped by children, new-age parents, social engineers, feminists, headshrinkers and guiltmongers.

It is idle to deny this self-evident fact of family life gone by, but it is nothing but maudlin masochism to wallow in the presumed guilt over opportunities not grasped.’
