Gooooooooal!

Last week, Jesse Llamas, starting goalkeeper for the Dallas amateur soccer team Roma FC, missed his team’s match against L.A. Galaxy to attend the birth of his firstborn son. Winning the game would have offered Roma FC a place in the quaterfinals of the 2006 U.S. Open Cup, which, apparently, is something of a big deal.

‘”It [was] important for me to be there for the birth of my son,” Llamas said. “It was a big thing for me.

“I would have liked to be at the game, and I would have been there if the baby didn’t come. But this is my first, and I wanted to be there with my wife.”

Without the services of Llamas, the team’s starting goalkeeper, his Dallas-based amateur team fell to the Galaxy—the tournament’s defending champion—2-0, at the Home Depot Center in Carson [California].

The loss marked the end of a Cinderella story in the tourney for FC Roma, which embarked on a surprising, and unlikely run in the event.’

In looking for information about Roma FC, none of the articles I found mentioned anything about Llamas, his missing the game, or reasons for doing so; only that the team was defeated. There were, however, several mentions about Galaxy’s forward sitting out of the game because of a pulled hamstring.
